"QUINTETTO SOSPESO" | CD
Some music is born for specific places.
In the past it was written for salons and intimate rooms. Boccherini is a clear example.
Today the concert ritual mostly happens in theaters.
Quintetto sospeso was written in 2021 for Arte Sella. It is dedicated “to the Fucina of Arte Sella for its 20 years of activity, to Emanuele Montibeller, to Mario Brunello, to all the artists and to those who dream.”
The piece reflects on nature in all its forms, and includes archaic techniques. Inside it you will find hypothetical reconstructions of Schubert’s unfinished fragments, and a three-movement Sonata based on traditional dances from Trentino.
The link with nature is central.
One movement is written for two hay cellos made by artist Julia Artico. I was lucky to play them when they were still in the open-air museum of Arte Sella, before nature reclaimed them.
The first movement is almost circular, like a journey where real places and imagined places
reflect each other. While I was composing, my one-year-old Saint Bernard Bernie hit the Mac keyboard with his paw. It created random notes, and I decided to keep that “paw print” in the score.
Boccherini deserves a modern study. He was the pioneer of the quintet, with hundreds written in many versions and scorings. In Quintet No. 4 in E-flat major, G. 410, you can hear folk elements and a form that feels hypnotic, almost ritual.
Carlotta Maestrini wrote Flowstate on a flight from Geneva to Palermo. She says: “Flowstate is dedicated to Giovanni, Clarissa, Petar, and Kinga, the fantastic musicians of the Quintetto Sospeso.
I wrote this while traveling, on the way back home.
I chose this title because it brings me back to a moment of losing self-awareness: a continuous flow, fluid and cyclical.”
